X (formerly Twitter) is facing another significant service disruption, with users across India reporting widespread access issues on both the website and mobile app. Many users are encountering Cloudflare’s “Connection timed out – Error 522”, indicating a failure to connect to the platform’s origin servers.
This outage comes just days after a large global disruption, raising fresh concerns about the platform’s technical stability.
Spike in Reports Across India
According to outage-tracking data from Downdetector, user reports surged sharply on January 16, 2026, with more than 45,000 complaints recorded by 8:38 PM IST. This marks a dramatic jump from a baseline of fewer than 20 reports, strongly suggesting a platform-wide issue rather than isolated user connectivity problems.
What Does Error 522 Mean?
Error 522 occurs when Cloudflare—the content delivery network used by X—fails to establish a timely connection with the platform’s origin servers. In simple terms, Cloudflare is reachable, but X’s backend servers are not responding fast enough, or at all.
Not the First Outage This Month
This is not an isolated incident. On January 13, 2026, X suffered a major global outage, with more than 24,000 users reporting problems. The disruptions were heavily concentrated in India and the United States, with major Indian cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai showing dense clusters of outage reports.
Previous Cloudflare-related disruptions were also reported on November 18, 2025, and December 5, 2025, pointing to recurring infrastructure challenges.
What You Can Do If X Is Down
If you are seeing Error 522, here are a few steps you can try:
- Check your own connection
Clear your DNS cache (ipconfig /flushdns on Windows) or refresh DNS settings on mobile devices.
- Wait it out
During the January 13 outage, services gradually recovered after several hours. X does not maintain a public status page, making official updates difficult to track.
- Monitor third-party trackers
Websites like Downdetector, IsDown, and IsItDownRightNow help confirm whether the issue is local or global.
- Change DNS servers
Switching to Google Public DNS (8.8.8.8) or OpenDNS may help in rare cases where ISP DNS resolution is contributing to the problem.
Latest Update
As of publication, some users report intermittent access returning, but widespread issues continue across multiple regions in India. X has not yet released an official statement explaining the cause or providing a timeline for full restoration.
